House Peens
OVERVIEW
What an incredible opportunity to design a large home on such a breathtaking site—just meters from the shoreline, perched 25 meters above the ocean. Nestled within the protected Garden Route Milkwood fynbos, the challenge was to create a home that would not only be a forever retreat for the client and his family, but also a place to welcome guests in an AirBnB section. It had to be a space that would capture the essence of their life stories, all while embracing those dramatic ocean views.

House Peens
The design also anticipated the future. A second phase was planned to allow the owner to have six rooms for AirBnB rentals. The main part of the house has two bedrooms for the owners, which could later be sectioned off for privacy.
The site presented challenges. There was no road access, and everything had to be designed to be self-sustaining. A road was built from the main highway, and smart systems were incorporated, including solar panels on the roof for energy, water harvesting, and a filtration plant to recycle water back into the home. A service room was included to house a generator and backup batteries, ensuring power even on cloudy days. Every appliance was chosen for its low energy use, contributing to the home’s overall efficiency.

Design New Stories
The final result was a majestic home with stunning ocean views that was also low maintenance. The owners are now living their dream, enjoying the peace and beauty of their surroundings every day.
